Session time: 10:30

Session description

As emerging business models take advantage of blockchain technology are firms ready to manage the risks arising from key technologies such as distributed ledgers and smart contracts?

  • distinguish between blockchain technology and crypto currencies
  • highlight the opportunities that the new technology brings to the financial system including case studies from proof of concepts (POCs)
  • what are the challenges in scaling blockchain for real world applications i.e. beyond POCs
  • are firms ready to trust the new technology where contracts are coded in software, have limited legal precedent and with private distributed ledgers not benefiting from decentralised control
  • in the face of these challenges how are regulators responding to manage firm, sector and systemic risks
